Developmental / Content Editor

Developmental editors look for “big picture” issues in a manuscript— whether academic, fiction, or non-fiction in nature— this includes organization, unity, structural deficiencies, weak arguments, plot holes, unsupported claims, dropped characters, logical inconsistencies, and ways to improve an author’s overall manuscript. Developmental and content editors are the most expensive type of editing services provided.

Proof Reading

Proofreading is the last line of defense against any typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors. Proofreading doesn’t address areas of content, but rather focuses on correcting any errors they see. Because proofreading is usually the last step to the publication process, any layout and consistency errors are examined as well.

Copy Editor

Copy editors focus on a manuscript’s style and tone and look for any errors in consistency. While doing so, copy editors will also correct grammar, spelling, syntax, word choice, and punctuation use. A copy editor is probably who most people envision when they think of book editors.

Format Editor

Specific types of manuscripts, such as academic publications, dissertations, and scholarly books require particular formatting guidelines (dependent on the university or publisher) in addition to using APA, MLA, or Chicago Style formatting.

“Dr. Brittain made the whole publication process easier, especially as English is not my native tongue.”
